It's everywhere, and for good reason: polka dots are universally popular, both on the catwalk and among fashionistas. This playful pattern is proudly displayed in both mini and XXL sizes. Its appeal lies in its sought-after vintage look, which pairs perfectly with more contemporary pieces. Both demure and discreet, polka dots have nothing to envy their leopard-print counterparts, since it is currently dominating the fashion industry. Here we break down and select some of the best pieces featuring this unique print.

Polka dots: a timeless trend

First appearing in 1926 on Miss Americana's swimsuit, polka dots have since made their mark on the fashion industry. Whether on rockabilly pin-up jumpsuits or Marilyn Monroe's dress in Billy Wilder's 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, this circular print spread throughout popular culture and, consequently, into wardrobes. Later, it also appeared on Julia Roberts in the iconic romantic comedy Pretty Woman, directed by Garry Marshall in 1990.

In the 1980s and 1990s, an icon also embraced polka dots, making them as essential as floral prints. Her name? Lady Diana. A royal figure who went on to become a timeless fashion icon, she embraced polka dots with a certain boldness. Without knowing it, Diana Spencer set the tone with XXL polka dots on long dresses and tight leggings. A few decades later, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus drew inspiration from the “Princess of Hearts” wardrobe for his Le Chouchou fashion show at Versailles in 2023. Unsurprisingly, the polka dot print appeared on a puffy dress with airy proportions.

In his spring-summer 2000 show, Ralph Lauren also highlighted the polka dot print. With simplicity, the American designer created a no-frills, slightly retro style, where polka dots became the leitmotif. Looking at the show today, it's amazing how relevant these silhouettes are. In 2025, polka dots are everywhere, even finding their way into the wardrobes of stars such as singer Dua Lipa and model Alexa Chung!

Polka dot selection with OniriQ

Despite its many uses, the polka dot print has, against all odds, retained its classic appeal. In black and white or white and black, the pattern oscillates between these two neutral shades, guaranteeing a pleasing simplicity. Let's start with a dip in the Sol swimsuit by Jacquemus. Here, the second-skin swimsuit is paired with Capri pants and black slingbacks. However, it can also fulfill its function and be used for swimming in the south. Welcome to Jacquemus!

When it comes to jackets, OniriQ loves a Valentino jacket with cropped edges that is reminiscent of Lady Diana's iconic looks. Its structured shoulders and concealed hook fastenings give it a majestic feel. For a more summery look, the Gina kimono designed by Tiphaine Guiran is light and airy. Made in a small village in the south of France, this long overcoat is handmade in limited quantities. The same goes for the Morane dress, in brown polka dot silk satin, made in northern France under the impulse of Marie Dewet, founder of the Lille-based brand. Flowing and dressy, the piece appeals for its short puff sleeves and slightly fitted cut.

For the bottom, the Miu Miu crepe skirt is right on trend! While the Italian brand is causing a stir, this white creation with black polka dots stands out for its crinkled look. In true messy girl style, it can be worn all summer long with a pair of flip-flops, paying homage to Miuccia Prada's impeccable taste. For shorts fans, Moschino offers a cotton voile piece inspired by men's boxer shorts. The little extra? The polka dot headband by Dolce & Gabbana goes perfectly with the other pieces in the selection.

The right accessories

It's impossible to adopt the polka dot print without a whole host of accessories. Ballerina flats, a scarf or even a tie... Polka dots are everywhere and can be incorporated into everyday outfits with disarming ease. The Repetto Cinderella ballerina flats, found on the Lulli website, feature a very special detail: sequined polka dots. Extra volume for a charming result! Unisex, the Tom Ford tie is for polka dot beginners. Basic but unique, it can be worn with a white shirt (or not).

Another accessory, this Prada scarf with two prints, floral and polka dots, in silk twill, illustrates the Italian fashion brand's duality in terms of stylistic choices. This Double Match spirit doesn't do things by halves and warms up the atmosphere on a slightly chilly summer evening. Finally, the mini Ganni Bou Bag, a phenomenon in its own right, is adorned with its most beautiful black polka dots for a Dalmatian effect. Chic!
