Synonymous with renewal, spring is also reflected in perfume bottles. Like an invitation to freshness and lightness after the winter months, “it calls for bright, nature-inspired creations,” says Amélie Jacquin, perfumer at Givaudan. At the heart of this quest is also a need for grounding. A spring fragrance cannot be just a breath of fresh air; “it must evoke a subtle balance between carefreeness and depth while retaining character,” says the nose. And to help us make the best choices during our next shopping trip, the expert has reviewed all the trends that will stand out this season.
Light floral notes
Spring is the season of flowers par excellence, but they are treated differently from the more opulent and warm compositions of the rest of the year. “They will be lighter and greener,” emphasizes Amélie Jacquin. Instead of heavy, sweet bouquets, spring floral compositions are more airy and transparent. Among her favorites are lily of the valley, rose, and cherry blossom, which evoke the purity and sweetness of early spring.
Fruits, aquatic notes, and citrus
The arrival of spring also heralds the arrival of fruity fragrances: “joyful and juicy fruits such as strawberry, rhubarb, and even cucumber.” Aquatic notes, reminiscent of the spring breeze, also contribute to this impression of freshness. Not forgetting, of course, citrus fruits (grapefruit, bergamot, lemon, etc.), which structure and illuminate the compositions while evoking images of sunny days and outdoor walks.
Woods and spices, never far away
Even though spring favors freshness and lightness, certain deeper raw materials, such as woods and spices, also find their place in the compositions. They will however be used sparingly, “with flowers and fruits,” so as not to weigh down the overall effect. This adds character without disrupting the harmony of spring. Other more sensual ingredients also remain present to bring softness and complexity, such as “musk and addictive notes like milk and vanilla.”
